Children and Families

When newcomers first visit Christ Church they're often surprised to discover what a "young" congregation we are. Much of that youthful energy comes from the fact that families with children and youth abound here. Throughout the week, children and their families stream in and out of our building as a result of our outstanding Day School. On Sundays, the pitter-patter of little feet is accompanied by the joy with which children fill our shared life. Our ministry to families is central to our work because navigating family life and faith in New York City has unique challenges and opportunities.

Nursery

A professional staff care for our youngest each Sunday from 8:45 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. Parents are given individual beepers when they sign their child in so that they can be constantly connected and assured of the well-being of their child. A bright, joyful, energy-filled space and a loving, caring staff await infants and toddlers.

Sunday School

This is a time for learning about and exploring our Christian tradition. In age-appropriate classrooms, the children learn the stories of the Bible through play, dramatic expression, art and conversation. Well-trained teachers introduce our children to the great stories and figures that have shaped the Christian faith. For more details on class ages and locations, click here.

Worship and Wonder

For our children in kindergarten through 5th grade, an age-appropriate worship experience takes place each Sunday simultaneous to our 11 a.m. worship service. Children lead worship, sing, pray and explore scripture together with teachers and musicians who make this an engaging and uplifting weekly experience. Our Sunday school and Worship and Wonder lessons are drawn from the common lectionary, meaning that their weekly foci will correspond with the same scriptures and liturgical seasons that are followed in the sanctuary worship, enabling families to share conversation and continue in worship and spiritual growth together at home and beyond Sundays.

Playgroup

Each Friday, parents and toddlers are invited to join a play group that serves to build connections between children and adults alike. A core group gathers weekly and we're always open to welcoming new participants. This group is for parents and their babies age 0-2.

Wednesday Kids

This cost-free afterschool program and fellowship time for students in kindergarten through fifth grades can be combined with our Children’s Choral Training program. Drop off is optional. Parents are always welcome to stay and play. This year the program content will be organized around two segments: One will offer choices between adult-facilitated stations for Art, Homework, Board Games, Share and Care circle time and Outreach Projects. The second will be an active group time that will include a range of physical games, fun exercises and stretches. The meal is optional and families will be asked to contribute to its cost and/or preparation.

Wednesday Schedule:

4:00 – 5:15 Children’s Choir
4:30 – 5:15 Non-Choir children and K-1 Choice Time
5:15 – 5:45 Dinner
5:45 – 6:45 Program for Choir kids and others who wish to stay. At this time, parents may have fellowship time together or help with the children.

Confirmation

For our youth in sixth grade and above, an opportunity to confirm their faith is offered each year. A process of weekly faith exploration is led by our ministers and includes opportunities to learn about our Christian tradition and to engage in dialogue about the faiths of our neighbors.
